In 2007 the BARD Group installed two BARD offshore 5-megawatt wind turbines on the Rysumer Nacken, an area of reclaimed land to the west of Emden, for the purposes of research. These turbines are the same used in the first BARD offshore wind power stations in the North Sea.

The aim is to expose the entire design to comprehensive tests and evaluations under conditions similar to those on the open seas. The electricity generated here is fed into the public grid. Since beginning their service life in 2007, both prototypes have shown outstanding results as regards reliability and availability.

Since then, the 5-megawatt generator nacelles were replaced with two prototypes of the new generation of „BARD 6.5“ turbines.
